Discover the Legacy Behind Portland’s Oldest Hotel

Born From the Golden Age of Rail Travel

Built In 1897

The Inn at St. John has proudly stood at 939 Congress Street since 1897. Originally commissioned by railroad tycoon John Deering, the inn was created to serve travelers arriving at the bustling train station once located across the street. Since then, it has remained Portland’s oldest continually operating hotel, welcoming generations of guests through its doors.

A Century of Warmth & Service

For well over a century, The Inn at St. John has served as a timeless symbol of comfort and care in Portland. As one of the few independently owned and operated hotels in the area, we’ve remained committed to offering a personalized, authentic guest experience — from our historic architecture to our heartfelt service.

Step Back in Time, Stay in Comfort

Victorian-Era Charm

Inside, the Inn retains much of its original charm: rich wood finishes, period furnishings, and tasteful Victorian decor that bring warmth and elegance to every stay. While we embrace the modern needs of today’s traveler, we take pride in preserving the atmosphere of a bygone era — one that makes every visit feel like a storybook moment.
