Born from the golden age of rail travel
Built in 1897.
The Inn at St. John has proudly stood at 939 Congress Street since 1897.
Originally commissioned by railroad tycoon John Deering, the Inn was created to serve travelers arriving at the bustling train station once located across the street. It remains Portland’s oldest continually operating hotel.

Portland’s longest-running hotel
A century of warmth & service.
For well over a century, The Inn at St. John has served as a timeless symbol of comfort and care in Portland.
As one of the area’s few independently owned and operated hotels, we remain committed to personal, authentic hospitality.

Comfort close to care
Stay steps away from Maine Medical Center.
The Inn offers a welcoming place to rest directly across the street from Maine Medical Center.
Whether you’re a patient, family member, or healthcare professional, our independently owned inn provides a comfortable home base with thoughtful service and a front desk available around the clock.

Step back in time, stay in comfort
Victorian-era charm.
Inside, the Inn retains much of its original charm: rich wood finishes, period furnishings, and tasteful Victorian décor.
We embrace the modern needs of today’s traveler while preserving the atmosphere of a bygone era—one that makes every visit feel like a storybook moment.

Honoring the past, serving the present
